Classification of land:
The main classifications of land in Khasi Hills are theRi-Kynti and Ri-Raid Land. The Ri- Kynti land belongs to a particular clan over which the clan has got property, heritage and transferable rights. The Ri-Kynti land is sub-divided into different categories like Ri-Khurid land obtained by purchase, Ri-tymmen-ancestral land etc. The Ri-Raid Land belongs to the Community and no persons have proprietory, heritable or transferable rights except the right of use and occupancy. The Ri-Raid land is also known as different name - Raid Shnong (the land were the village is situated), Raid Hima the land where all people of the community have the right to cultivate, cut wood or to craze their cattle etc. The Ri-Raid lands are managed and administered by the Khasi customary laws. The Government also owns some lands which were taken by way of Agreements from the Chief, Lease, Acquisition, Out-right purchase etc. The administration of government lands is governed by the Government laws.
Various types of Ri-Kynti Land:
Ri-Kynti lands are known by different
names, but they all have more or less, the same classification, thus
(a) Ri-Kur, (b) Ri-Nongtymmen, (c) Ri-Maw, (d) Ri-Seng, (e) Ri-Khain,
(f) Ri-Duwar, (g) Ri-Khurid, (h) Ri-Bitor, (i) Ri-Dakol and (j) Ri-Shyieng.
Various types of Ri-Raid Lands:
(a) Ri Shnong, (b) Ri Ri Shnat, (c) Ri Kuna, (d) Ri Lyngdoh, (e) Ri Bam Syiem, (f) Ri Law Kyntang, (g) Ri Law Lyngdoh, (h) Ri Law Niam, (i) Ri Law Along, (j) Ri Law Sang, (k) RiLaw Sumar, (l) Ri Bam Lang, (m) Ri Lynter, (n) Ri Leh Mokotduma, (o) Ri Ai Mon Sngewbha, (p) Ri Phlang Ri Baraduh, (q) Ri Diengsai Diengjin and (r) Ri Samla.
