Introductory
The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) was constituted under the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India (Article 244 (2), 275 of The Constitution of India) with Executive, Legislative and Judicial powers.
Its jurisdiction extends to the 4 (four) Districts of Meghalaya State, namely
- East Khasi Hills District,
- West Khasi Hills District,
- South West Khasi Hills District and
- Ri Bhoi District
- Area = 10443 Sq. Km
- Number of Villages = 2387 villages
- Population = 14,68.040 (Census 2011)
In the Autonomous District of Khasi Hills there are 54 Traditional Institute locally known as Hima/Elakas which are the Administrative Units with thousands of Villages having their own administrative and judicial functions. These Units are more or less the parallel of the Panchayati Raj System prevailing in other parts of India.
